Course Reflection
During my service learning course I decided to volunteer at the Salvation Army Good Samaritan Center in Sand City, California. The Salvation Army provides services and hope to those less fortunate. Through their various programs they provide service to the homeless, low-income families, and youth and they run a holiday assistance program each Thanksgiving and Christmas. My job as a CSUMB volunteer was to help out the front desk by providing the homeless with hot meals, showers and laundry services and also assisting as an English-Spanish translator during the holiday food drive.
I learned a lot from helping those less fortunate in my community. This Good Samaritan center and service learning course helped me gain lots of experience. The center where I was volunteering about 6-8 hours a week helped me meet a very large diverse group of interesting people. While volunteering at The Salvation Army Good Samaritan Center it opened my eyes and made me realize how many people are in need of a plate of hot food or even a person that can hear them out for 5 minutes. I really enjoyed volunteering there and completing my hours for the simple reason that those people made me realize that money or materials are not the answer to everything. Volunteering at the Good Samaritan center taught me how to feel empathy for those who are in need and also taught me how to work with people from different backgrounds and ethnicities.
