Course Narrative
In my first term as a Spanish major in Spring 2013, I took Spanish 302 (Hist/Phonetic Struct Span Language). This class focused on surveying the development of modern Castillian and Latin American Spanish, its evolution as a Romance language, the Roman period, Visigoth and Arab influences, Native American contributions, and its modern language diversity. It also described the phonology and morphology of modern Spanish. This class met the MLO 2 requirement on language and linguistic knowledge through a variety of coursework assignments. Through a few book assignments, writing assignments, tests and projects we developed an understanding of the structure of the Spanish language. Throughout the course of this semester I learned a few things and gained a few skills that in fact will help me later on through my career as an undergrad at CSUMB and further education. Being a Spanish major with an emphasis in Language and Linguistics knowledge, it is very important for me to really focus on MLO 2 courses for the same reason that these courses deal with the sound system of Spanish (phonetics/phonology), advanced grammar, Spanish-English translation, a general introduction to Spanish linguistics, and composition and verbal conversation. As a Spanish graduate my goals for the future would be to better my Spanish-English translation skills as one day I would want to become a translator or interpreter for the court. Also, another goal would be to further my knowledge on Spanish linguistics and actually be able to understand the Spanish language form, language meaning, and language context.
